I was hired by CBS Chicago to help run their “Best of” section, which was where they posted all of their food, nightlife and entertainment articles. Soon after I got there, I was writing pieces daily, editing and managing freelancers for the section and helping out with social media.
I liked lifestyle content. If I wanted to make an analogy to the Lion King’s the Circle of Life during a donut review, I could. I was allowed a certain amount of space to be ridiculous as long as I told the truth about the things I was reviewing, whether the subject was a new karaoke bar or a Navy Pier exhibit about the Rolling Stones.
My last two years at CBS, I started contributing to their music sites. I wrote pieces for their classic-hits station and helped hire and manage web content producers for their other stations. Duties might include showing a young writer the ropes, penning a concert review, or teaching a DJ the dos and don’ts of social media. Eventually, nexus inside our little media web, connecting our music, news, and sports sites to better share content.
